Munich

Hotels: 25hours Hotel The Royal Bavarian

The bar downstairs is genuinely good - the kind you'd drink at even if you weren't staying upstairs. Rooms lean playful without tipping into gimmick, and it's a short walk from the station.

Milano

Hotels: Uptown Palace

A good hotel for work - quite corporate, but that's rather the point. Central, comfortable and easy.

Amsterdam

Hotels: art'otel Amsterdam

A lovely, quirky hotel near Centraal - art everywhere and personality to spare. I hear the food is good too.

Hotels: DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station

Right by Centraal and well connected for everything, with a very nice rooftop bar to end the night on. An easy, reliable base.

Barcelona

Hotels: Hotel 1898

The roof is the selling point - a lovely pool, good views, and quiet when you need it. A solid base for the city.

Hotels: SLS Barcelona

A truly luxurious stay - extremely accommodating staff, beautiful views over the marina, great facilities and great food to go with them. Hard to check out of.

London

Hotels: Canary Riverside Plaza· Canary Wharf

Right in the heart of Canary Wharf - good for a work visit, with easy connections. Grab something to eat by the river instead of the hotel itself.

Hotels: Montcalm Royal London House· City

An excellent hotel with a great rooftop bar - The Aviary - overlooking Finsbury Square. Hard to fault as a City base.

Hotels: The Hoxton, Shoreditch· Shoreditch

Looks like a bar as you walk in, which tells you what it values. The hotel itself is pretty good, but the social space and the location are the real draw.

Hotels: The Montcalm at The Brewery Townhouse· City

The private kerbside entrance drops you straight into the thick of it, which is the selling point. Rooms are smaller than you'd think - fine for a night, not a sprawl.

Hotels: Treehouse Hotel London· Marylebone

Unique interior with stunning city views from the rooms, and the rooftop bar - The Nest - has panoramic views over London. Hard to forget.

Hotels: Virgin Hotels London-Shoreditch· Shoreditch

Stylish interior, and beneath the hotel there's Blue Marlin Ibiza London - a genuinely cool space. Went down there for a work event and it held its own.

Elsewhere in England

Hotels: Hoar Cross Hall· Staffordshire

Country house spa done properly. Commit to a full day of doing absolutely nothing - a flying visit wastes it.

Hotels: The Elms· Worcestershire

Stayed multiple times - a very discreet spa hotel in Worcestershire. The greenhouse spa is unique and memorable, and while it's nice in the summer it really shines in the winter: fireplace-lit bar with sofas, intimate ballroom dining and cosy rooms. Great gym too, with generous staff.

Phoenix, Arizona

Hotels: Arizona Grand Resort

A sprawling resort with everything on site, and a good base for Scottsdale and the drive north to Sedona.

San Francisco, California

Hotels: Hyatt Regency San Francisco· Embarcadero

An enormous place - the atrium is a sight in itself - with good service throughout. A well-placed base on the Embarcadero.
