The bar downstairs is genuinely good - the kind you'd drink at even if you weren't staying upstairs. Rooms lean playful without tipping into gimmick, and it's a short walk from the station.

Good Vietnamese with plenty of options - the red curry was excellent. Beats most of the 'street food' options in the area, since it's a full restaurant.

Had a Sunday lunch here - very cosy and homely, with a small outside area.

A very Berlin-esque little bar with a live DJ setup, typically playing good electronic music. There aren't many spots like it in Munich, so it's a good place for meeting the other electronic enthusiasts.

A beautiful old building, very centrally located. Sit out front for great people watching, or head inside for the cosy interior and a stunning courtyard.

An enormous beer garden with a classical beer hall on a hill - huge capacity, long tables, litre steins, and properly lively. Everything Munich in one place; good for a lunch or a long night.

A roomy beer garden that catches plenty of sun. It can look a little empty at first glance, but everyone is usually around the back.

Lovely corner tavern on the south side of Munich - pleasant in the evening when you're sat outside.

A beautiful walk, especially on a sunny day - you'll find plenty of locals lounging and picnicking by the stream that winds through the middle of it. Walk to the Eisbachwelle and you can catch surfers riding one of the world's most famous urban surfing spots.

A lot of fun, but it demands some prep. Reserve a table in a tent if you want a reliable night - I did the Paulaner, Augustiner and Hofbräu tents. Hire your Tracht rather than winging it: Lederhosenverleih is my top recommendation, and Bavarian Outfitters - with multiple branches - is also good quality and authentic. Be very wary of the other hiring places, especially the cheaper ones. It's cash only and tipping the waitresses is expected - so bring plenty.

The big open-air market in the middle of town - good for a drink and food as much as the browsing. A proper Munich institution.
