Pacific Coast Highway, California

Road trip - drove Highway 1, San Francisco to San Diego. The great American drive - started in San Francisco and ended in San Diego. Take it slow, sleep in the small towns and let the road set the schedule.

Route & Stops
Route & Stops: Monterey

Stayed the night, but really just a layover out of San Francisco on the way to Carmel.

Route & Stops: Carmel-by-the-Sea

Picturesque and affluent seaside town. Calm beaches and locals - very still, save for the frequent supercar rolling around.

Route & Stops: Santa Cruz

Had a look around town and journeyed to the pier for a couple of drinks. Worth a wander.

Route & Stops: Just north of Cambria

Found a motel along Highway 1 just outside of town.

Route & Stops: Santa Barbara

Nice town centre at night with plenty of good spots. Grabbed a motel right on the beachfront.

Route & Stops: Los Angeles

Drove up to the Hollywood Hills - park further down and hike up for the iconic Hollywood sign picture, with some nice views over the city on the way. Drove through Beverly Hills. It's a car-first city, and dodging traffic is an absolute must. Headed to Venice Beach and worked out at Muscle Beach while taking in the energy - a little dicey, but worth a look around. It's simply enormous, so it probably deserves a trip in its own right.

Route & Stops: San Diego

San Diego is great. That's all for now.

Venice Beach2

Bars: Hinano Cafe

Just a good beer and a cheeseburger. Dive-bar style, but with outdoor street seating a few steps from the sand.

Gyms: Muscle Beach Gym

The original outdoor gym on the sand. You can pay for a day pass at the kiosk nearby - do it once, for the story.

Carmel-by-the-Sea1

Restaurants: Terry's Lounge at Cypress Inn

Lovely for breakfast or lunch with gentle live music - ate in the courtyard on Easter Sunday and had eggs royale that were hard to beat. The lounge was co-founded by Doris Day.

Santa Barbara1

Restaurants: Loquita

Stunning Spanish restaurant. Get the outdoor seating and settle in.

Cayucos1

Coffee & Bakeries: The Hidden Kitchen

Great brunch place right on the beachfront - healthy smoothies and meals, and unreal coffee. Worth timing a stop around.
